Personality & Traits

General Overview Galan was raised by his grandparents to be an independent thinker yet taught to hide his thoughts from the world. He had always been something of an idealist with notions of right and wrong not common to average Romulans but necessity had always forced him to keep such views a secret. The mysterious disappearance of his own parents just after he was born always served as a reminder to him that his people were not a free people and that careless words could end lives. To this day, Galan always gives his words a great deal of consideration before he speaks and tries to view a situation from all angles before he acts.

While trained to live life with patient discipline Galan is not as naturally stoic as he seems to be at first glance, beneath his cool glacial exterior a candle flame of youthful exuberance still burns that sometimes threatens to melt through. A true explorer at heart, few things serve to stoke this flame better than stepping into the unknown, be it at the helm of a Starship, on the surface of a strange new world or in the arms of an exotic new lover. Galan lives and breathes change.

As a Command Officer he tends to lean toward strict, often keeping junior officers and fresh senior staff on a short leash. He holds age, experience and discipline above all else. Older officers tend to have an easier time under his command, provided that they have proven themselves.

Personal History Early Life

Born on Chuulka Colony, a little known agrarian moon orbiting a gas giant in the Chuulka Tek star system and inhabited by farmers, miners and their families. Galan's parents were homesteaders and ran a large Hinta Bean plantation just outside of the colonies central city. They were simple people and content to ignore the rest of the happenings in the Empire. Unfortunately the Empire had not forgotten them and in early 2353 when Galan was but a small child his parents were taken by the Tal-Shiar for undisclosed reasons.

Galan's grandparents were once prominent educators on Romulus but fled that life in the 2340's in favor of a simple life, as new Imperial leadership pushed the Empire into an ever more aggressive stance against the Klingons and potentially soon with the Federation. His grandparents took the young Galan and raised him in his parent's absence, teaching him the importance of appearing loyal while in secret clinging to the hope of a better future.

Galan grew up living the life that his family had chosen for him, learning the ways of the land and how to make do with few resources. He didn't mind the work or the quiet simplicity of the life but his heart ached for more, he was stricken with wander lust and ached for the stars. He was uneducated as a child but it became more obvious that he was intelligent and inquisitive. As he grew into a young man his grandmother sensed more and more that Galan was unhappy with their chosen lifestyle and was destined for more. Despite her distrust of the Empire she began introducing him to literature and science from her personal Imperial College collection.

As a young man Galan devoured books and this sated him but as he approached manhood it was no longer enough. Though his grandfather had forbidden it Galan chose to leave the colony to see Romulus, his wanderlust had gotten the better of him and it was a decision that would keep him away from home for over a decade.

Romulus was far more than Galan had ever anticipated, he was little more than a second class peasant migrant worker when he arrived but all that changed in 2371 when he entered into a romantic relationship with an officer of the Galae. T'sera was her name and she was ten years his elder, Galan had fallen in love with her upon first meeting and this was useful to the young Centurian. He became a toy, even if briefly and though the relationship ended mere months later by the time it did he knew what he was meant to do with his life.

The Imperial War College

Galan was initially rejected by the Imperial War College in mid 2371 based on his peasant background and lack of formal education but the rejection only served to bolster his determination. Forced to work to support himself he continued on as a migrant worker, tending to the exterior aesthetics of wealthy Romulan's homes and within a few months moving on to general maintenance. All the while he looked for work at the home of someone influential, scouring contract boards until finally his patience payed off.

Employed as a full member of a Senator's maintenance staff he worked hard, taking on whatever extra duties were needed to get him closer to the main estate. Within a month he had managed to procure the position he needed and once in the house he waited until the time was right. He caught the Senator one morning and with a boldness well beyond his station he approached the elder Romulan. He had known that the statesman was fond of literature and that was the basis of his approach. He regaled the Senator with his knowledge of Vultoom's Folly, a classic work and one that was required reading at the College.

Galan was severely reprimanded for his audacity and swiftly fired by the labor boss despite the ease with which he had conversed with the Senator. To make matters worse, the boss had ensured that Galan would never find work on Romulus again and his fortunes quickly began to falter. He was preparing to leave for home just a week later when he received an official correspondence from the Senator detailing how difficult it had been to pull strings and that Galan would owe him a large favor once he graduated.
